After pursuing a career in the corporate arena, Marlene was headhunted by Dr Retief to project manage the relocation to his newly built practice within Waterfall Estates in October 2011. The first week of January 2012 saw the opening of the doors of the Medical Practice, now known as Waterfall Health Centre. Initially she undertook managing the practice. During this time both Marlene and Dr Retief became involved with Laserderm and their owners; whereupon Dr Retief was asked to join the Laserderm panel of associated doctors. Marlene became very interested in laser hair removal and skin rejuvenation.
During 2014 she underwent intensive training with both Sternlaser (on the physics of how a laser works) and with Laserderm (on the Gmax Pro Medical Grade Laser) under the tutelage of Mazanne van Staden, senior laser therapist with 15 years’ experience and leading instructor at Sternlaser. For 3 years Marlene has honed her skills as a medical hair removal specialist, and business owner. As part owner and sole operator, Marlene takes pride in her success with the aesthetic results that she has been able to achieve.
After graduating at Wits University in 1980, Dr Retief started practising as a General Practitioner in Johannesburg. In 1987 he added a post graduate diploma in Occupational Health and started consulting to various industries, including Premier Milling and SA Breweries. In 1989 he took up a full-time post at Tongaat Hulett working as the resident onsite doctor and occupational health consultant at their Amatikulu Sugar mill on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
1993 saw his return to Gauteng, where he embarked on creating a Wellness & Quality Ageing practice in Johannesburg. Concurrent to this, Dr Retief developed a special interest in Phlebology – the treatment of veins anywhere on the body. Over the past 20 years this has become a speciality of his practice. Extensive study and training in Phlebology, Sclerotherapy and Wellness & Quality Ageing have included regular attendance at seminars and fellowships abroad, particularly Europe and the USA.
Dr Retief’s vein work receives referrals from many colleagues including dermatologists, plastic surgeons and aesthetic centres around South Africa, including the Laserderm SA Group. For more information on Phlebology and Sclerotherapy, please visit his website www.veinstherapy.co.za.
The medical practice is based at Waterfall Health Centre in the prestigious Waterfall Estates.
